Racist?

This is a cartoon that was published in today's New York Post. It's supposed to make light of the monkey that was recently shot by police. If a media outlet of this caliber is publishing something of this nature they need to reevaluate some things. Shaking my damn head, they know they are wrong. Thoughts?

  1. Oh wow. This is really astonishing. I can not believe this got published. I don’t read the New York Post, and I definitely don’t plan on it now. I am so appalled. I had to talk about this drawing with my roommate before I even realized its full implications. This is really sad. The artist, editors, and publishers of this should all be embarrassed, because I am. This cartoon is kind of unclear in its meaning. Obviously it can be seen at racist, but why are they linking the monkey to the creator of the stimulus bill? What connection are they trying to make? I am thankful for this RGM class because it has really opened my eyes to these types of things, and I’m also not so sheltered and naive as I was before.

  2. Candice - blacks have historically been compared to various apes as a way of racist insult and mockery. Since Barack Obama wrote the stimulus bill, there you have it, in one sentence. This cartoon could have easily been a good joke about the crazy monkey being shot by cops, but the caption just took it to another place. The editor of the Post is not even apologetic either. It's shameful.
